1. The Simple Bucket Toilet
The quickest emergency replacement:
- Materials: 20L bucket with lid, trash bags, saw/saw chain, seat (camping toilet seat)
- Setup: Seat on bucket, trash bag as liner
- After use: Cat litter, sawdust, soil, peat sprinkle over (odor binder)
- Seal: Knot bag, lid on, take out of house
- Note: Per person 2-3 bags/day. Bags robust (double layer!)
2. Composting Toilet (more comfortable)
- Function: Separate solid and liquid waste
- Advantage: Liquid part less smelly, solid part compostable
- Materials: Two buckets, separation seat (or self-built with cardboard/plate)
- Liquid: Dilute with water (1:10), on plants/ground (not edible!)
- Solid: Cover daily with litter (sawdust, soil), compost after 2 weeks
3. Compost Toilet
- Duration: After 1-2 years composting, humus is safe and benefits plants
- Rule: Always cover with carbon litter (sawdust, straw, leaves, soil)
- Temperature: Heat accelerates composting (at least 1 year at >20°C)
- Never fresh on vegetables: Only after complete composting and only for ornamental plants/trees
4. Hygiene with Emergency Toilet
- Wash hands: Always! With soap and water (if scarce: disinfection)
- Disinfection: Wipe toilet bucket daily with bleach solution
- Change trash bags: Daily, never overfill
- Storage: Bucket outside living space (balcony, garage, basement hallway)
- Odor: Cat litter, lime, sawdust are the best odor binders
5. Checklist: Emergency Toilet
