๐จ The best defense is escape.
Property can be replaced โ your life cannot. Confrontation is always the last resort.
1. Prevention Before Confrontation
- Situational Awareness: Always observe surroundings (exits, people, behavior)
- Body language: Walk upright, confident, purposeful. Don't appear like a victim.
- Eye contact: Brief, not challenging. Shows: "I have seen you."
- Put phone away: In dark/unsafe areas: no phone staring (blind!)
- Groups: Never walk alone through dark/abandoned areas
- Escape route: Always know: Where is the nearest exit/safe place?
2. De-escalation (Conflict Reduction)
- Stay calm: Panic escalates. Control breathing.
- Language: Low, slow voice. Don't shout, don't insult.
- Hands visible: Not in pockets. Open hands show peaceful intent.
- Keep distance: At least 2-3 meters. Never let them get too close.
- Avoid victim role: Don't beg, don't plead. Confident: "I don't have anything with me."
- Give away: Money, phone, bag โ if demanded. Throw immediately, create distance, run away.
3. Physical Self-Defense (only if escape impossible)
3.1 Physical Principles
- Goal: Escape. Not win. Not defeat. Get away.
- Weak points: Eyes, nose, throat, solar plexus, knees, shin, ankle, groin
- Unarmed: Keychain between fingers, pen, deodorant spray (in eyes), flashlight (blinding)
- Shout: "FIRE!" or "POLICE!" attracts more attention than "Help!"
- Force: Don't hesitate. One quick, determined action surprises.
3.2 Simple Techniques
- Palm strike: Palm against nose/chin. Determined, forward.
- Knee kick: Knee to groin/thigh (at close distance). Escape!
- Elbow: Backwards to stomach/ribs (when grabbed from behind)
- Stomping: Heel on foot/instep (shock + release)
- Eyes: Fingers in eyes (only in life danger!)
4. Legal (Germany)
- Self-defense (ยง 32 StGB): Defense against current unlawful attacks allowed.
- Proportionality: Means must match attack. Deadly force only against deadly threat.
- Duty to retreat: If escape possible โ Escape. Self-defense only if no other way.
- Weapons: Firearms, knives, batons are NOT allowed for self-defense (except gun license).
- Everyday objects: Keys, umbrella, flashlight, deodorant spray = legal as tools.
5. Checklist: Self-Defense
- โ Pepper spray (legal, effective, 3-5m range)
- โ Flashlight 1000+ lumens (blinding + tactical)
- โ Whistle (alarm)
- โ Keys as emergency weapon (between fingers)
