☢️ Radioactivity & Meltdown

Shelter, decontamination, iodine – protection against invisible danger

🚨 Radioactivity is invisible, odorless, tasteless. It can travel thousands of kilometers. Protection is possible – but only with knowledge and preparation.

1. Types of Radiation and Dangers

RadiationRangeProtectionDanger
AlphaFew cmSkin, paper, clothingStrong if inhaled/swallowed
BetaUp to 1mAluminum foil, thin metal plateSkin burns, inhalation
GammaHundreds of meters+Concrete, lead, earth, water, distancePenetrating, cancer, DNA damage
X-rayHundreds of metersConcrete, lead, distanceSimilar to gamma, less energetic

3. Protection Measures

3.1 When you are at home (Shelter-in-Place)

  1. Indoors: Basement or innermost room (more walls = more shielding)
  2. Windows/doors: Close, seal (duct tape, wet cloths, foil)
  3. Ventilation: Turn off (AC, fans, close chimney)
  4. Water: Tap water may be contaminated – boil or use canned goods
  5. Food: Only preserved food (cans). No fresh vegetables/fruit.
  6. Duration: At least 48-72 hours, often longer (cloud dispersion)

3.2 When you are outside

4. Decontamination (Cleaning after radiation exposure)

  1. Clothing: Remove, shake off, pack in double plastic bags
  2. Shower: Soap, shampoo, DO NOT scrub (grinds particles into skin!)
  3. Nose/mouth: Nasal rinse, mouth rinse, toothpaste
  4. Hair: Wash (radiation adheres to hair!)
  5. Water: Used water is contaminated → do not reuse!

5. Long-term Measures

6. Checklist: Radioactivity
